Edna and Gladys Sexton, born on Christmas Day 1916 in Letcher County, were twins who attended Hindman Settlement School for a number of years.
After receiving a solid educational foundation at Hindman:
Edna moved to Philadelphia where, after training as a nursing, enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and served in World War II. After the war, she married and settled in Arizona with her husband had one daughter. Edna passed away in 1989.
Gladys moved to Brasswood, North Carolina and worked as the nutritionist at the John C. Campbell Folk School. She married William Holland in 1940 and passed away in 2005.

“Bella entered the Dyslexia Program behind, with little to no confidence in reading. She hated to read and would get upset if she missed a word and quit. However, she worked hard and made great success in summer school. She is now more confident and loves to read!”
-Melissa, Bella’s Mother
We’re aiming to raise $5,000 to support student scholarships for our Dyslexia Program. These funds provide opportunities for students like Bella to gain the skills and confidence they need overcome their barriers. Would you chip in today with a gift–of any size–to help us meet this need?
