DESCRIPTION:In challenging times, many of us want to express our opinions about current events in op-ed columns, letters to the editor, social media posts and online platforms. But it’s a different kind of writing than most authors and poets are accustomed to. Tom Eblen, an award-winning former newspaper columnist and member of the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame, will teach techniques for writing effective opinion pieces — and getting them published. In this three-session class, Tom will help participants focus their ideas, structure their essays and improve their ability to write persuasive opinion pieces for publication.\nCourse will meet virtually 10:00am-11:30am EST\nSaturday September 5\nSaturday September 12\nSaturday September 19\n \nAbout the Instructor\nTom Eblen, a journalist, writer and photographer, is literary arts liaison at the Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning, where he manages the Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame. He was metro/state columnist for the Lexington Herald-Leaderfrom 2008 to 2019 and the newspaper’s managing editor from 1998-2008. Tom returned to his hometown in 1998 after 14 years with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and five years with The Associated Press. He has won many awards, including the 2013 media award in the Kentucky Governor’s Awards in the Arts. He was inducted into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame in 2016 and is a past president of the Bluegrass Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.\n\nREGISTER NOW!
