The Makery: Literary Snapshots: Writing Your Life Story with Sonja Livingston
The truth may not always be stranger than fiction, but true stories continue to fascinate and connect us like nothing else. This class focusses on translating your personal experiences and observations of the world into writing. We’ll explore ways to make real life stories engaging and meaningful by discussing the tools available to creative writers regardless of genre (such as scene, symbolic language, dialogue, structure, point of view and verb tense). We’ll also take the pressure off and tackle the challenge of how to begin writing a memoir or essays by starting with a series of short pieces.
This is a generative workshop with the focus on inspiring and producing new work. Prompts will help you unearth your own stories while reading examples of contemporary creative nonfiction will illuminate the many styles, voices and approaches being published today.
This three week class is completely asynchronous so you can work on it on your own time.
The Makery at Hindman Settlement School is a new online studio for writers and artists with full-time lives. Our goal is to help deepen your writing and reading practice throughout the year and from the place you make your home.
