At the start of this school year, Caleb, a third-grade student at Beaver Creek Elementary, enrolled in our Reading Lab as a non-reader. His teachers noted that he was often disruptive in class and was falling behind his peers. It didn’t take long for ReadingCorps Tutor Anna to discover that Caleb was full of life and incredibly intelligent. He even had a book that he wanted to read, but was unable. So, the two of them set a goal that they would work hard and work together so he could read it all on his own soon.
With newfound confidence and success, Caleb now enters Miss Anna’s classroom eager to share stories and dive into practicing his sight words and sentences. His progress over this year has been incredible! End-of-year testing has shown Caleb achieved a 2-year and 3-month gain in his passage comprehension abilities and a 1-year and 5-month gain in his word attack, which is the ability to decode, pronounce, and understand unfamiliar words. His teachers have even shared that his behavior in class has significantly improved and he is volunteering to read aloud and in front of his classmates!“Seeing Caleb and my other students gain confidence and self-esteem as they grow as readers is the greatest reward!” Anna remarked. “As adults, we know the importance of being able to read and comprehend text. I love knowing that my work as a tutor positively impact’s these children and their future endeavors. Reading is a must!“
Congratulations to you, Caleb, on all of your success so far!
