Celebrating Service

With our Dyslexia Summer Tutoring Program in the rearview and the new school year rapidly approaching, we had the opportunity to gather our ReadingCorps team and their families together for an end-of-summer celebration with a cookout and group painting class on the newly opened rooftop patio at the Appalachian Artisan Center overlooking historic downtown Hindman.

Before diving into the bounty of burgers and brats prepared by our grill master Corey, we took a moment to reflect on the past year, specifically the memories made and the lessons learned. Here’s what some of our tutors shared.

  • “My service has shown me that I am more resilient than I ever dreamed I could be. I have been able to deal with challenges while still wearing a smile for my students!” -Chrystal
  • “I learned that I have the ability to help others reach their goal and that I can offer a boost of confidence when these kids stop believing in themselves.” -anonymous
  • “Having served as a ReadingCorps member for several years, I have had the opportunity to see incredible growth in our students. One student in particular not only advanced in reading, but also how his personality evolved. He seemed so much happier and more engaged compared to when he was first enrolled. It was amazing to see!” -Maria
  • I have learned that when things become overwhelming and difficult to give yourself grace. It’s a great time to remind yourself of your strengths and goals.” -anonymous

The celebration concluded with a time of creative expression led by the Appalachian Artisan Center’s Master Artist In Residence Kirk Banks. Check out these beautiful landscapes!

We are so grateful for the ReadingCorps team who pour their love and passion for children and education into their service each day. Onto the next year of making a difference and changing lives!
