Settlement Awarded $1M to Support Literacy & Math Initiatives

AmeriCorps and Serve Kentucky, the federal and state agencies for national service and volunteerism, have awarded Hindman Settlement School two grants totaling $1,014,084 supporting new and existing initiatives.

Funding from the agencies will be used to support the continued implementation and growth of ReadingCorps, a literacy intervention program targeted at K-3 students who face barriers to grade-level reading as a result of one or more dyslexia indicators, and our new MathCorps project, which will provide targeted support to elementary and middle school students who are performing below grade-level in math

Approximately 50 individuals will provide research-based one-on-one and small group instruction to more than 800 children at 25 public elementary schools across Bell, Floyd, Knott, Leslie, and Perry Counties and through after- and summer-school settings each year.

“We are grateful for the growing investment from our federal and state partners which, when paired with local match dollars, will provide students from across eastern Kentucky with the support and skills needed to unlock their potential for academic success now and into the future said Josh Mullins, the Settlement’s Senior Director of Operations. “Moreover, we look forward to supporting the AmeriCorps mission of providing individuals in our community with invaluable career experience and professional development opportunities throughout their terms of service.”

In addition to a living allowance and health benefits, each AmeriCorps member, after successfully completing a full-service term, will receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award from the National Service Trust of approximately $7,395 to use toward tuition at eligible schools or for student loan repayment. This equates to more than $325,000 annually to support the educational pursuits of individuals in our community.

“AmeriCorps grants through the State and National program focus our agency’s priorities on the needs of local communities,” said AmeriCorps CEO Michael D. Smith. “These grants increase AmeriCorps’ impact where it’s needed most, integrating funding with programs guided by evidence-based solutions to support underserved communities across the country.”
