The Makery: Continuing the Appalachian Dulcimer
Immerse yourself in the mountain music of Kentucky and learn how to play the Appalachian Dulcimer! The mountain dulcimer is an accessible and intuitive instrument for beginners. In this 3-week course, we’ll dive into continuing to learn technique of the Appalachian Dulcimer, and learn lots of Kentucky and Appalachian songs. This class is for folks who are new to this instrument or maybe have had a couple lessons but are wanting to build their skill on the instrument. We’ll work on techniques like strumming, fretting melodies and chords, playing in multiple keys and tunings and lots and lots of tunes and songs! Join Sarah Kate Morgan, Traditional Arts Education Director at Hindman Settlement (and a few special guests) for this 3-week exploration of Kentucky’s state instrument!
All classes will meet virtually via Zoom

Also includes informal jam sessions on Sundays October 12 & 19
Materials Needed
-Mountain dulcimer in playable condition. A limited number of loaner instruments are available for a rental fee of $50 and will be available for pick-up at Hindman Settlement School. Failure to return the loaner instrument after the 3-week course will result in a $250 lost instrument fee.
– Electronic tuner, (we suggest the Snark brand clip on tuners)
-Picks, any kind from a music shop will be just fine
