Thanks to your ongoing support, stories of hope are seen and felt every day here in Hindman. While many kids and their families experience a world that is riddled with challenges and obstacles, we are blessed to hear the stories of how lives are changed by the work of Hindman Settlement School. Below are just a few of the many ways that your contributions have made a lasting impact.
"I KNEW HINDMAN WAS THE PLACE WE NEEDED TO BE."
“When Joah presented with reading difficulties, I knew Hindman was the place we needed to be. It is extremely difficult when you know how bright your child is but, despite everything, they cannot read. At the end of his first-grade year, he could not read a single word. Hindman has been instrumental in his progress thus far, and I see growth in him daily. What Hindman has instilled in him is a willingness to try and a drive to want to be a reader.”
—Megan, Parent of Dyslexia Program Student
"I'M SO GRATEFUL FOR THE SETTLEMENT."
“I attended every single market this season. Not only to shop, but also because it’s a good place to check in with other seniors. It gives me company. Me and some of my friends were able to receive the $48 in vouchers to purchase fresh produce, meat, and eggs this year. Plus, Hindman was able to double the value of our vouchers.
With my money, I was able to purchase beans that I canned, froze, and dried for winter. I’m so grateful for the Settlement.”
—Brenda, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program Recipient
"PICK & BOW HAS GIVEN ME CONFIDENCE AND THE CHANCE TO DO SOMETHING SO AMAZING."
“Without Hindman, I probably wouldn’t be able to learn to play the guitar. I have met great new musicians and friends that I wouldn’t have known without this program. All in all, Pick & Bow has given me confidence and the chance to do something so amazing. Thank you for giving not only me, but all the kids around here the chance to learn music and where it comes from!”
—Kylee, Pick & Bow Music Program Student
"AT HINDMAN SHE FEELS SEEN, SUPPORTED, AND WITH 'HER PEOPLE.'"
“My high school daughter looks forward to the Settlement School’s Ironwood Writers Studio. She’s attended both summers, and it’s her favorite place. At Hindman she feels seen, supported, and with ‘her people.’
For my daughter to have literary ties to our family’s Appalachian roots while growing up in another part of the state does my mama heart proud!”
—Sally, Parent of Ironwood Writers Studio Student
While much has been accomplished, need still exists. Our entire team is dedicated to ensuring Appalachian Kentucky’s best days and our greatest successes are yet to come. With much work to do as we continue to rebuild our historic campus from the July 2022 floods and expand our reach to new communities, we need you now more than ever.
As the year comes to a close, we are asking for you to make a tax-deductible donation to support the future of Hindman Settlement School. Regardless of how you give, or what you give, we are grateful for your continued, faithful support.
