Kayla thacker

Kayla Thacker’s involvement with Hindman Settlement School’s dyslexia intervention program began in the early 2000’s when she accepted a role as a tutor with our intensive five-week summer program. Through the decades, her involvement has grown from a part-time tutor to serving as one of our program’s school-based reading intervention specialists in 2021, the curriculum director for all intervention delivery modes in 2023, and, most recently, program director beginning 2024.

Kayla holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education (P-5 Certification) from Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Kentucky and was in the inaugural honor cadre hosted by the Knott County Educational Foundation. She is currently pursuing Lexia LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) certification, which prepares educators to deliver the foundational and fundamental skills of reading and writing instruction to their students. Since 2015, she has served students in classrooms through the Knott County School District.

“My time working with the students in the Settlement’s dyslexia summer program was a driving factor in my decision to pursue a career in elementary education,” Kayla said. “I look forward to working alongside our team of interventionists and AmeriCorps members to build on the strong foundation of success and improve the outcomes for the hundreds of students we reach each day across the region.”

Kayla resides in Hindman, Kentucky and, in addition to her leadership to the dyslexia intervention program, continues to serve students with dyslexia and its characteristics through the Reading Lab at Emmalena Elementary in Knott County.
