Pick & Bow After-School Music Program
Pick & Bow offers free music lessons for 4th-12th grade students living in Knott, Floyd, and Perry Counties! Our mission is to pass on the traditional bluegrass and old-time music of the Appalachian region to the next generation. Our team of 11 music teachers offers lessons in acoustic guitar, fiddle, banjo, dulcimer, mandolin, and ukulele.
Fall semester lessons begin the second week of September. A parent or guardian should attend the first lesson for a Parent Orientation.
There are three ways to take music lessons:
- 9th-12th grade students take group lessons on Wednesdays from 4-5:30pm
at Hindman Settlement School.- Lessons start September 10th.
- We start with a healthy snack, a group game/activity, and then break off into instrument lessons.
- 4th-8th grade students take group lessons on Thursdays from 4-5:30pm
at Hindman Settlement School.- Lessons start September 11th.
- Thursday students may ride a bus from Hindman Elementary to Hindman Settlement School
- We start with a healthy snack, a group game/activity, and then break off into instrument lessons.
- Students also have the option to take weekly private lessons. These lessons will be scheduled directly with your instructor to suit your schedule once you sign up. Private lessons can be at the Settlement or online.
Fill out the online application and we’ll be in contact to confirm their slot.
Limited number of spaces; preference given to returning students. We offer loaner instruments for students at no cost. You will be charged a $150 lost instrument fee if your student drops out of the program and doesn’t return the instrument.
Pick and Bow is a component of the ‘In These Mountains: Central Appalachian Folk Arts and Culture’ initiative and supported in part by the generous support of South Arts, a nonprofit regional arts organization.
