TROUBLESOME RISING DIGITAL ANTHOLOGY
The Bridge to Patience Park
Kiesa Kay
The fish and frogs and wildlife must have been amazed by what happened to the creeks and rivers. Where the South Toe, North Toe, and Cane Rivers meet at the Nolichucky, the waters ran twice as fast as Niagara Falls. Favorite swimming spots disappeared forever as houses spun and splintered in the raging water. The force twisted vehicles, uprooted tall trees, and crumpled bridges.
Taylor Togs Water Tank
Kiesa Kay
Every business in the Taylor Togs textile plant got destroyed in the flood. The Micaville Post Office went floating downstream. Destroyed businesses in the Micaville Loop of Yancey County, NC included Body Tribe Fitness, Lucky Sheep natural fibers, Maples the Sweet Spot, Mountain Electronics, Micaville Outpost, all the shops at Vintage Antiques, the Tin Crown in the old Silver Bullet building, a car shop, and Micaville Elementary School. The South Toe area also lost Celo Inn, Ten Thousand Things Food Co-op, the Rummage Room, and the Toe River Crafts Gallery. Entrepreneurs and employees lost everything. The water tower rested crookedly on its side for several months at the edge of Highway 19, a stark reminder that some things never would return.
Kiesa Kay, poet and playwright, created a twelve-part series, “Transforming Trauma through Creative Expression,” for Survivor Space.
