Come Hell or High Water

Paige Mengel

“Come hell or high water”
I’ve always heard said.
Then the high water came
And brought hell alongside.

Water came rushing down from the hills
With a vengeance like we’ve never seen,
Carrying raw sewage, carnage and death
Leaving mud and debris in its path.

The river came up and took out
The roads and bridges, houses and trees.
It took land and crops and jobs and lives,
Leaving tears and despair in its wake.

“Come hell or high water”
Is what folks always said.
But the high water subsided
And left hell behind.

“Come hell or high water”
Is what folks always said,
Seeming like we had a choice.
It was never supposed to be both.
