We are seeking dedicated individuals who want to make a lasting impact in the life of a child through intensive reading and/or math intervention.
Our school-based AmeriCorps tutors serve in schools across the region, providing one-on-one and small-group instruction to help students build the foundational skills they need to become successful readers and mathematicians. Our tutors come from a variety of backgrounds, including retired educators, college students pursuing careers in education, career changers, and community members with a passion for helping children succeed. No previous tutoring experience is required—we provide the training and support you need to be successful.
Students who are proficient in reading and math by the end of third grade are more likely to experience long-term academic success. Yet in Appalachian Kentucky, more than two-thirds of students enter fourth grade without reading proficiently, and many continue to struggle with foundational math skills.

WHAT DO TUTORS DO?
- Serve in a school full-time from September through May, working one-on-one or in small groups with students who need extra help with reading and/or math.
- Conduct tutoring sessions that are 25-30 minutes long each day school is in session using a scripted, easy-to-follow curriculum that you are fully trained in.
- Track student progress and regularly meet with coaches to assess data and work toward learning targets.
- Support families through after-school services.
- Administer assessments to monitor progress.
- Through hands-on training and ongoing coaching, tutors will develop valuable skills and potentially have opportunities to take on leadership roles throughout the program.
WHAT ABOUT SUMMER TUTORING?
Tutors may choose a contract that includes summer service, allowing them to continue receiving their living stipend and extend certain AmeriCorps benefits. Alternatively, they may choose a contract that offers the opportunity for summer school employment through Hindman Settlement School, subject to availability.
Flexible positions are available with member terms of 300 and 1200 hours.
WHERE DO TUTORS SERVE?
Tutors serve at local public elementary schools. We have positions available a every school in the Breathitt, Knott, Leslie, and Perry County school districts along with select schools in the following districts: Floyd, Hazard, Letcher, Middlesboro, and Pineville.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS
- Living Stipend: All tutors receive a stipend every two weeks during their term of service. The amount of each stipend is dependent on the contract chosen.
- Flexible contracts of 300 and 1,200 hours available.
- Tuition Assistance or Loan Repayment: Complete a 1200-hour term over the course of the school year and receive an education award of $5,176, payable for tuition or student loans. Tutors 55 and older can transfer their award! Complete a 300-hour term and receive an education award of $1,565.
- Childcare Assistance: Tutors serving in a full-time capacity may be eligible to receive childcare assistance (household income restrictions apply).
- Medicaid Application Assistance: Most tutors qualify for Medicaid throughout their time of service with AmeriCorps. A kynector will support those interested in the process.
