Launching The Imagination Library of Knott County!

One of the questions I am often asked by DAR friends from across the country is “How can we help support Hindman?” While there are always worthwhile projects such as our Seed Shower, donations for scholarships, and a need for instrument strings, I am pleased to share about a new initiative of the Settlement School: the Imagination Library of Knott County.

What’s the Imagination Library? This project, conducted in collaboration with the Dolly Parton Foundation, exists to increase access to age-appropriate books and promote kindergarten readiness. Each month, children from birth to five years old who are enrolled in the Imagination Library will receive a high quality, age-appropriate book mailed to their home at no cost to the child’s family. But we’re more than just about simply delivering books – we’re here to inspire a lifelong love of reading and to promote home literacy practices!

How can we help? The cost to the Settlement is approximately $3 per child per month. We are seeking friends and supporters to sponsor one or more children for a year—helping us put more books into the hands of more kids! Would you or your chapter consider sponsoring a child?

Sponsoring a child in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a simple, yet impactful way of furthering the mission of Hindman Settlement School, and it makes a great project for your chapter led by the DAR Schools committee, Literacy Promotion committee, or as a New Horizons Course capstone project. For every child sponsored with a gift of $30 or a monthly recurring gift of $3 or more, donors will receive a special recognition pin from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library!

Many DAR friends have already made a gift to support the launch of this work! Some of the early supporters of the Imagination Library of Knott County include the Lawrence Kearny Chapter DAR of Cape Coral, Florida, Sandy McCann, former NSDAR Vice President General and Honorary State Regent of Ohio, Suzanne Harris of Michigan, and dozens more!
