On July 11th, we wrapped up our 43rd annual Dyslexia Summer Tutoring Program after an exciting five weeks—and what a summer it was! This year, we served 28 students in person and 17 students virtually, with about half being returning students—a testament to the trust families have in our program. Our graduation was filled with smiles as students went home with hearts full of pride after having felt celebrated and seen. There’s genuine magic in watching these kids transform over just five weeks, growing more confident and skilled. One of our youngest students summed it up beautifully on awards day by saying, “I wish summer school wasn’t ending. I want it to last seven more weeks.” It’s such a good feeling to know that our students feel so comfortable and supported that they don’t want it to end!
We are pleased to share that students enrolled on campus experienced tremendous gains over the course of their participation. Students achieved a total of 9 months of gains in reading ability and 3 months of gains in math.
Each student challenged and pushed themselves every day and our entire team is proud of the progress made, but our team selects one student each year who exhibits significant proficiency and skill in a reading achievement, comprehension, and other factors for the Michael Mullins Outstanding Student Award, which is named in honor of our former executive director who facilitated the creation of this vital program.
Alirah, Recipient of Michael Mullins Outstanding Student Award
Alirah didn’t just achieve academically this summer, she exhibited qualities day in and day out that demonstrated her exceptional character.
Our interventionists shared that Alirah adapted to changes with grace and used her positive attitude and determination to inspire both her classmates and her teachers. This confidence helped her move forward when faced with challenges and encouraged everyone around her to do their best, too!
