Each day in partner public schools across southeastern Kentucky, our ReadingCorps tutors work with students to teach fundamental reading skills. Our curriculum is designed to aid in word identification, word attack (the ability to decode, pronounce, and understand unfamiliar words), and passage comprehension. Periodically, we showcase some of the students who are making great strides in their reading skills along with the tutors who help make this success possible. Today, we’re heading to Cordia School in Knott County.
MEET BELLA
“When we began working with second-grader Bella, I ascertained quickly that she was not familiar with the alphabet or the sounds of consonants and vowels. We started using this simple wooden alphabet to learn letters and to teach sounds along the way. She can now select the uppercase letters with almost 100% accuracy, can write 3-letter words like cat, hat, sat, log, dog, big, and so on, indicating an understanding of vowel sounds and consonants.
When I praise Bella for her performance on the task at hand and her overall progress, I sometimes ask her if she can tell that she has made a lot of progress. She simply nods “yes,” but will sometimes indicates that she is happy and pleased with her accomplishments. The fact that in a short period of time, and after two years of making little advancement, she is now making academic progress and expresses an interest in learning to read is, I think, a measure of success!“

Let’s all celebrate Bella’s progress so far and continued success!
