It’s not difficult to imagine with as many success stories as we hear coming from the 34 tutors serving in our Reading Labs across our 21 partner school sites in Eastern Kentucky that our ReadingCorps members love their service and find it incredibly impactful not only for the children receiving support, but also in their own lives. On this day celebrating love in all of its many forms, we’d like to share what some of tutors had to say in response to the question “what do you love about your service role at Hindman?”
“I LOVE being a ReadingCorps member! I am in my fourth year of service and have personally seen the improvements these students make through our program. I have experienced the difference we make in these kids lives! Recently, I had one student tell me he looked forward to coming to my classroom because I actually cared about him. Not only do we help these students improve and grow their reading abilities, but we also help their confidence and their attitude about school.
I’m so glad I was able to have this experience. For the first time in my life, I AM making a difference!“
-Tiffany, ReadingCorps Tutor
Not only do AmeriCorps members have the opportunity to make a difference and receive a living allowance during their term of service, they also earn a Segal Education Award of up to $6,985 annually to repay qualified student loans or to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs.
“I love that I am earning an education award through my service because I plan on finishing my Bachelor’s degree in education and art. My goal is to be able to teach art therapy classes to help students have a judgement free space—a safe place—to grow, to develop. and just be kids.”
-Jessica, ReadingCorps Tutor
