As we are in the midst of #AmeriCorpsWeek, we asked members to reflect on their service by sharing about a student who has made significant gains in their math proficiency over the school year. Brooklyn joined the Settlement’s team of AmeriCorps tutors last fall and has been supporting students at East Perry Elementary with daily instruction using an evidence-based curriculum. Read what Brooklyn shared about Joshlynn, one of her inspiring students, below.
Joshlynn’s journey has been nothing short of inspiring. When her family first enrolled Joshlynn in the Settlement’s tutoring program, math felt like an insurmountable challenge—addition and subtraction were difficult hurdles, and her confidence was at an all-time low.
At the start, Joshlynn was quiet and hesitant, rarely speaking up during lessons. She often doubted herself, avoiding participation in discussions for fear of making mistakes. A key component of the Settlement’s program is to create a nurturing and supportive environment where students like Joshlynn can feel safe to learn, grow, and explore math in new ways. Through personalized instruction, hands-on activities, and interactive games, Joshlynn began to grasp fundamental math concepts. With every small victory, her confidence grew. Slowly, she started engaging more and offering answers to the problems presented.
Over time, her transformation became evident. No longer the shy student who feared speaking up, Joshlynn now approaches math with excitement and determination. She’s not just mastering addition and subtraction—she’s eager to tackle more complex problems. Her newfound confidence extends beyond the classroom, allowing her to interact more openly with peers and fully engage in discussions.
“Seeing Joshlynn’s growth has been incredibly rewarding,” AmeriCorps tutor Brooklyn shared. “Her journey is a powerful reminder of how patience, encouragement, and the right support can shape a child’s learning experience. As she continues to embrace her abilities, the possibilities for her future are limitless!“
