Each day in partner public schools across southeastern Kentucky, a team of approximately 30 AmeriCorps tutors work with students to teach fundamental reading skills. As we are in the midst of #AmeriCorpsWeek, we asked members to reflect on their service by sharing about a student who experienced progress in their reading ability along with their wish for all the students they reach. While there were so many powerful stories shared, today’s spotlight is on Alicia at Mountain View Elementary in Leslie County and her student Segar.
Segar, a bright and determined second grade student, is a shining example of perseverance and progress. When Segar was first enrolled in our reading program nearly two years ago, he was facing challenges with phonemic awareness, speech, and blending sounds to form words. Over his time receiving tutoring in a small group setting with our evidence-based curriculum, Segar has made remarkable strides in his reading ability. His progress reports show significant improvements in passage comprehension, word attack, and word recognition.
“As Segar’s reading tutor, I have witnessed firsthand his remarkable progress,” Alicia shared. “His ability to recognize letter sounds and blend words has improved significantly, and his self-confidence has flourished. This year, with tutoring integrated into the classroom environment, I have seen how much he has grown—not only in reading but also in his speech and overall self-assurance.“
Also amazed by his transformation is Segar’s classroom teacher, Ms. Baker. “He has made me very proud! He has worked so hard to get to where he is now,” she shared. “The change from the beginning of 2023 until now has been astonishing. He now shows more confidence in his reading skills and eagerly raises his hand to answer questions in class!”
“Segar’s story is one of determination, support, and success. His grandparents’ encouragement has played a crucial role in his journey, and I am incredibly grateful to have been part of his growth. Watching him overcome obstacles and develop a love for reading has been a rewarding experience, and I am so proud of all he has accomplished! Segar, I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Keep reaching for the stars!”
