We’re very excited how the literary arts program has expanded the ways we contribute to the publishing of writers and artists from Appalachia and beyond. For years, our Fireside Industries imprint has put forth award-winning books in fiction, poetry, and nonfiction, including works by emerging and well-established writers.
One of our Fireside Industries books, the anthology about the 2022 flood, Troublesome Rising, has been a powerful way to document what happened here at the Settlement School and our surrounding communities, as well as discuss bigger issues that affect Central Appalachia. We knew we wanted to continue the discussion and allow for more voices to join in, so we developed a companion website with new writings, photos, and videos related to our flood or other such events. We plan to open submissions for this online anthology once a year. Read the first release of the digital companion today!
Additionally, we’re celebrating a year with Untelling, our literary and arts magazine. In the first two issues of Untelling we have published 85 writers, artists, and photographers spanning from Knott County to Iceland. Submissions are now open until April 1 for issue 3 to be released in June. People can send art, photography, poems, fiction, or nonfiction. You can view the submission guidelines, read some sample pieces in each issue, and subscribe to receive Untelling at www.hindman.org/untellingAnd our most recent contribution is The Mosaics

We have such a long and vibrant history here of developing writers and writing community, and we’re delighted to help contribute to the next stage of the writing process: bringing the finished work out to the readers.
